Introduction

To whoever it may concern,
Throughout the following fall semester of 2018, I, Timothy Davies, an undergraduate student at Western Carolina, will be completing a project for a class I am enrolled call "Diversity in Contemporary Society" or SOCW 402 section 50. The project is called the "Oppression Project" and to complete such I will be examing 14 different instances of oppression and discrimination that have occurred within the United States in the last year. It is my responsibility to find these instances and examine them through predetermined criteria. I think it important that word 'oppression' and discrimination be defined so that readers know what I am referring to when I use the words. 

 Oppression, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is as follows. 

I would also like to mention that I won't exclusively examine the alternate definition as put forth by Cambridge dictionary:
 I will not be doing this for the simple reason the feelings proceed an action. To look solely at the feelings would deny the examiner the chance to see what caused them.

 In addition to this, I will also be looking into discrimination primarily as defined by Merriam-Webster's 1's definition. 


 I hope this project benefits all those who read it and they gain a more well-rounded understanding of life in the United States.

Many of my views have matured and grown. My intellect has been engaged to think and discern, to feel and to sympathize. I hope my understanding of people and their need for understanding can be one drop in the bucket of goodness that makes this planet a place worth living in. FINAL ENTRY 14: Black Ninth Grader is Shot at When Knocking on Detroit Suburb Door for Directions

1.       Summary of article – what is article about? (brief – do not tell the entire story) On a Thursday morning in April, a boy missed his bus to school in Detroit. He set out on foot and got lost. He decided to knock at a door in a neighborhood and ask for directions. Seconds later he was met with a shotgun. As he fled shots were fired. All of this was captured on the owner's security camera footage. It also captured the ninth grade boys race; African American. The man was convicted of a felony charge and faces up to 12 years in prison. The residence fabricated a story about the boy trying to get inside the house but the footage does not back thi up. The residence has been broken into five times in the last ten years and therefore they are on edge. Nothing makes excuse for this, however.
