ENTRY 12: American's Views on Gender Equality; a Fluctuating Perspective

1.     Summary of article – what is article about? (brief – do not tell the entire story)

The article shared about a study that was recently completed regarding American's views on gender equality in the workplace and in private life. The article found that the 4 past generation shave progressively gotten more and more equal. Melinials are the most equal but there was surprise by the researchers. A small percentage of menials said that women were more equal at home than at work. They gave reasons for this such as the fact that many Gen-Yers started their careers right around the recession and this caused many of them to send the male out to be the breadwinner. The overall data was interesting and showed a journey of equality for women. Please send the graph below:

(Egalitarians believe that women should be equal in Both sectors. Ambivalents believe either one or the other. Traditional believe that men should be the primary breadwinner and woman should be the one caring for the household).

Another interesting snippet regarded a study conducted in 22 countries regarding the happiness of parents. It found that in the U.S., due to the lack of policy that protects families, there is a disparity in the happiness of parents compared with non-parents. This does not exist in other countries.

2.     How does the story relate to oppression/discrimination?

This is a historical view on the oppression of women. It shows how successive generations have gradually been moving towards a more equal standing. The hope is that when generation Y comes into leadership and take the full power of entities of the county, these views will be implemented and the inequality of yesteryear will be removed for future generations. This is a hopeful entry with data to back its hope.

3.     Who is oppressed?

Women have historically been oppressed and discriminated against.

4.     Who is oppressing?

Men!

5.     How are they oppressed? What type of oppression/discrimination is involved (individual, organization, structural, make argument for other types)?

The oppression of woman as shown by this has been on a societal level. From home, to school, to work, to hobbies, women were not allowed the same opportunities as men. As one zooms into this issue they can find nearly every type of oppression within this larger issue. There is certainly individual, sexual, organizational, structural, and many many more types that are exhibited and need eradication.
6.     Explore the significance in our society. What are the implications for this oppression? What does this say about the values of our society?

Times are changed. The data says this. But they're changed slower, in the U.S., than some thought they would. Society, for hundreds of years, has viewed women as child bearers and housekeepers and not much more. Progress has been made, from the liberation of woman rights to equal or more equal educational opportunities to the recent Me Too movement which brought justice to sexual harassment, good things are happening. Sitting down and celebrating is not the answer though. The momentum needs to be carried into creating a truly equal environment for the generations to come.

7.     What was your personal reaction? Explore thoroughly. What aspects(s) of your own socialization has led you to this reaction?

I believe men and women should be equal in the house and the workplace. However, I do also believe that woman have capacities that clearly show they are more suited to certain tasks such as childbearing. Men don't have the capacity to bear children nor the capacity to provide them with sustenance. Women do. This does not limit them to these roles but I believe that extra protection needs to be provided to not overlook these attributes. For my family, I would happily share in the household duties at an equal level but I would want her to take off time from work if we were to have children to spend extra time bonding with the child. I would also want to take time off but not as much.

8.     What did you learn?

I learned that society is making progress towards a more equal situation for both men and women. I learned the difficulty like a fiancial crisis can cause progress to lessen for a time. I learned that other countries who value and protect the family at a legal level have higher levels of happiness.

9.     How do you think the media represents this story?

I think the media told the story in a fairly equal matter of fact tone. There was a nice mixture of data and narative. I enjoyed the findings of other data being presented as well. One of a best written pieces I have read in a while.

10.  What was your source? I read this article through the New York Times online newspaper. You too can do the same by clicking on the following link: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/03/upshot/americans-value-equality-at-work-more-than-equality-at-home.html
