ENTRE 6: Poll Surveying Native Americans Experience with Discrimination

1.     Summary of article – what is article about? (brief – do not tell the entire story)

The article was the retelling of the results of a poll that was conducted in the United States regarding discrimination that Native Americans experience. It told how the natives report experiencing higher discrimination in an are where there was the majority of people living there were Native Americans. It reported discrimination in the areas of interacting with police, applying for jobs, being paid equally or considered for promotions and trying to vote and participate in politics. The results indicated that 3 times as many discrimination experiences in a Native American majority area in comparison to a non-majority area. The results for these areas are as follows:

It also looked at discrimination in a non-geographical manner. The results can be seen here.
In addition in reported that man reported more negative perception than woman.
The filler details were be discussed in greater detail below.

2.     How does the story relate to oppression/discrimination?

This story relates to oppression and discrimination in that it tells the experience of Native Americans and how many feel discrimination against. The article quoted Stephanie Fryberg who is the associate professor of psychology and American Indian studies at the University of Washington. She said that Native Americans are a "generally omitted from discussions of discrimination." It affect, the article reported the discrimination of the people that face such heavy discrimination, few even talk about it.

3.     Who is oppressed?

Native Americans. The poll survey individuals from all around the United States.

4.     Who is oppressing?

All other humans. The pole didn't look at any specific people group who were in charge of all the discrimination, instead, it simply accounted for the experience of Native Americans unattached to their oppressors, which the exception of the police.

5.     How are they oppressed? What type of oppression/discrimination is involved (individual, organization, structural, make argument for other types)?

The surveyed reported on institutional discrimination in the following areas: policing, job markets, politics, healthcare, and college acceptance.

6.     Explore the significance in our society. What are the implications for this oppression? What does this say about the values of our society?

The implications are disheartening. The data from the poll did not indicate why natives experience more discrimination in a majority area than in a non-majority area but it appears to indicate that, when a group of oppressed individuals are confined to themselves, the oppression grows more severe and it receives less recognition. The larger view of this issue is that the government values resource more than people and is willing to oppress a people group in order to gain those and if they people group don't have the social fighting power, they will be left with whatever handout is available.
7.     What was your personal reaction? Explore thoroughly. What aspects(s) of your own socialization has led you to this reaction?

My personal reaction was one of lament. I live less than 50 miles from the North Carolina Cherokee Reservation and have visited many times. It is crazy that think that right in my backyard there is a group of people that report discrimination on such a large level was alarming. In addition to this I also was left feeling underinformed. The article reported what it did well but I would like to know more and see better data, rather than a simple phone interview I would like to have deeper, more ingrained data, that gives more concrete details about the experiences of discrimination many have had.
8.     What did you learn?

I was thoroughly fascination as to why the Natives are more heavily discriminated against when they are mainly amongst there own people group? This seems opposite to what one would expect. This was new to me. It sparks my curiosity as to whether discriminated people are better off in groups of the discriminated or on their own? You would feel safer in a group but is one actually better off in terms of experiencing discrimination.
9.     How do you think the media represents this story?

The aforementioned Stephanie Fryberg said that Natives "have been rendered invisible in so many domains." The seems to be true, in searching for discrimination on many people groups, there are articles about evens from the very recent past, the past month in most cases. However, for Natives, the articles were far older and less frequent. I think NPR did a good job of telling the data that this poll found but I think based upon my limited research and experience, the media could do better at representing this discriminated against group.
