ENTRY 5: NYC Coined "Jewtroplois" by Map Hackers
1. Summary of article – what is article about? (brief – do not tell the entire story)
The article tells of the instance that took place in Late August 2018 where unidentified hackers, or rogue workers in the company MapBox, hacked their mapping software to change the name New York City to 'Jewtropolis'. The attack had a widespread effect since Snapchat, Citi-Bike, and Foursquare all source their mapping software from MapBox. The attack was one of 80 suggested name changes. It is the only one that made it through. MapBox issued an apology. The article finished by speaking about anti-semitism and the 90% increase of crimes revolving around it that a particular Anti-Defamation League noted between 2016 and 2017

2. How does the story relate to oppression/discrimination?
This instance of discrimination brings light to the ongoing anti-semetic discrimination that has never been eradicated. In addition to this, it also shows the new arena for discrimination; the internet. This kind of discrimination was not possible 10 years ago. Apps like Snapchat, Citi Bike. and Foursquare all use the base layer map that they source from MapBox Maps. Through accessing this source the attackers had a massive audience. Discrimination being voiced on the internet is nothing new nor will it be going away. A quote from the article reads "Haters are increasingly looking for ways to take advantage of new technologies and promote anti-Semitism." Measures that can both prevent it and allow people to maintain their free speech are difficult to achieve but need to be examined.

3. Who is oppressed?
Social media users were inundated with offensive information. But more importantly, Jewish people were attacked and discriminated against.

Unidentified hackers who are anti-semitist.
Unidentified hackers who are anti-semitist.
5. How are they oppressed? What type of oppression/ discrimination is involved (individual, organization, structural, make an argument for other types)?
Racial oppression was present in that it attacked the Jewish people, specifically call anti-semitic oppression. This was caused by either an individual or an organization to change the name of New York City.

6. Explore the significance in our society. What are the implications for this oppression? What does this say about the values of our society?
This instance shows the unfortunate, persisting existence of hatred for the Jewish people in society. The same hatred that fueled the massacre of millions in the second world war lives on today's culture. The implications are that there is still anger and frustration towards the Jewish people and that racism is still very much alive. However, social media and news sources were quick to respond with condemnation towards this act which shows that society at large is not at all in favor of this.

7. What was your personal reaction? Explore thoroughly. What aspects(s) of your own socialization has led you to this reaction?
I was raised as a Christian. I have grown up and adopted Christian beliefs into my own life as an adult. I am familiar with the Jewish religion in that it is also an Abrahamic faith. I am distraught over the ill-treatment of the Jews. I have Jewish-Isreali friends who currently live in Isreal. This is so hard for me to understand as it just looks like someone is living with their head in the sand and choosing to talk about what they see. The Jewish people I know are friendly and kind, they have a strong community, and provide benefit to society. I hope to this kind of hatred cease to exist.

8. What did you learn?
I was rudely awakened to how powerful a tool the internet is. The global reaches it as in its grips is worthy of awe and of respect. This particular instance is not alone; the internet is regularly used for people from all walks of life to forward their point of view. Sometimes they are kind and positive and sometimes they are rude and exclusive, and sometimes they are extremely unkind and backed by a bloody history of hate. The internet is a force to be reckoned with.

9. How do you think the media represents this story?
I feel as if the media told this story from a balanced perspective and included informing secondary information such as the statistics gathered by the Anti-Defamation League. I do wonder, however, if MapBox could have had someone hack them who worked for them. None of the articles I read seemed to mention this being a possibility.
